Students are given a topic with three pictures, each providing different interpretations of the said topic. Based on one, (two, or all ) of the three pictures, students are required to write a composition based on the topic. Here’s an example…

Examiners also assess the candidate’s English language proficiency by looking at his or her use of vocabulary in the essay. This does not mean that the more fanciful words you use, the more marks you will get. Candidates must demonstrate good control over vocabulary by using words that are appropriate to the context in order to score well.

For the theme of “A Surprise“, a student wrote an entire composition talking about how his friends threw him a surprise party. He ate cake. They played games. And he received lots of presents. Nothing wrong with that except – ALL the other students taking the exams wrote the same thing! There was also no conflict or problem to overcome.

Now that the PSLE composition exam is over, we will be examining the 2019 PSLE composition exam topic for the possible story lines and content ideas. The very first step is to determine if the title is a direct or indirect one. In this case, the topic has an indirect title as the moral value cannot be immediately known just be reading the title.
