Literature, in its broadest sense, is any written work. Etymologically, the term derives from Latin litaritura/litteratura “writing formed with letters,” although some definitions include spoken or sung texts. More restrictively, it is writing that possesses literary merit.

To be classified as English literature, the work just needs to be written in the English language. Many of the great English classics are hundreds of years old, yet they are still being read today. In fact, many of the stories are still being adapted for the stage and the big screen.
